The staff looks like the one on Connan the Barbarian. The one the bad guy had.

Seriously, what's with the snakes? A Roman Catholic would not have such a thing.

The Gospel refers to Moses lifting up serpent on a pole to heal the people of snakebite. The Gospel sees that as a prophetic symbol of Christ being lifted up on the cross to heal us of sin.

So the Patriarch's staff is an ancient symbol of the cross.
