19 April, Fourth Tuesday of Easter, A.D. 2005: DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS

I announce to you a great joy.
We have a Pope:
Most Eminent and Most Reverend Monsignor,
Monsignor Joseph
Cardinal Ratzinger of the Holy Roman Church
who takes for himself the name Benedict XVI

[Pope Benedict XVI gives his first greeting as pope.]

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

After the great Pope John Paul II, the Lord Cardinals have elected me, a simple and humble laborer in the vineyard of the Lord.

The fact that the Lord knows how to work and to act even with inadequate instruments comforts me, and above all I entrust myself to your prayers.

Let us move forward in the joy of the Risen Lord, confident of his unfailing help. The Lord will help us and Mary, his Most Holy Mother, will be at our side. Thank you.

[Pope Benedict XVI gives his first blessing as pope to the City and to the World.]

May the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of whose power and authority we are confident, intercede for us to the Lord.
Amen.
By the prayers of blessed Mary ever-Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, and the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints: may God almighty have mercy on you, and, having forgiven you all your sins, may Jesus Christ bring you to eternal life.
Amen.
May the almighty and merciful God grant you pardon, absolution, and remission of all your sins, a space for true and fruitful repentance, an ever-contrite heart and amendment of your life, the grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit, and final perseverance in good works.
Amen.
And may the blessing of God almighty, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, descend upon you and remain with you always.
Amen.
