World's largest mosaic of Christ

"Christ in Majesty"
National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
Washington, D.C.

The following two images are details from the icon of "Jesus Christ the Prince of Peace, King of the Universe" that is behind the altar in my monastery's church. The actual icon is eight feet square.

Somehow the image makes me think more of Saint Michael, defender of humanity. Of course, the great archangel would be the very first to come to Christ's side in any case.

I went to the Easter Vigil at the National Shrine - and just imagine it enveloped in darkness ... and then with the very first lights coming on in the basilica - dramatically accompanied by a small orchestra ... cymbal crashes and the first light hits the face of Christ in this mosaic. A bit showy ... yet quite effective in stirring the emotions.

He looks really peeved. But I imagine when He returns in glory, He won't be all smiles and sunshine. In fact, I've always imagined a voice heralding his return ... thunderous, angry sounding ... terrible in the very best sense of the word.

Gwyn H aks if he may use these excellent icons in a book he is writing? If so, what wording for the acknowledgement? Are you able to reply here as a comment? Thanks.

We have the legal copyright to the "Prince of Peace" icon of my monastery. We don't allow commercial (money-making) reproduction of the icon by others than ourselves. However, if you want to use a photograph of the icon within the text of a book, please write us so that we can send a letter of written permission.
